#279: Young’s Market Company Building (Westlake)

The Young's Market Company Building in Westlake was the flagship store and HQ for a pioneering supermarket chain turned liquor distributor. Its story teaches us a lot about how food and beverage retail evolved in the early 20th century. Despite major interior changes and damage in the 1992 LA Riots, the building itself remains a grand exercise in Italian Renaissance Revival refinement. It's now a shoe store.

Here's an exceptionally creative Queen Anne/Eastlake Victorian, built in 1894 and owned from 1898-1900 by a wealthy prospector who discovered a successful gold mine in the Mojave Desert.

Social History

This unassuming craftsman in Westlake was the home of the pioneering gay rights activist Morris Kight from 1967-74. But Kight’s house was more than just his residence. It was also a think tank, a clinic, and a meeting place for the LA chapter of the Gay Liberation Front, a group of gay activists with a radical approach to creating political and social change for their community.
