LA Times: 10 Los Angeles Landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places You Can’t Miss (as curated by me!)
February 21, 2023
Holy poop, I’ve got a byline in the LA Times! This is even better than the time my whole family made it in by smelling lilacs in Idyllwild. And only marginally more legit than the time my mother was immortalized front page for clutching a package of toilet paper in the early days of the pandemic.
The Times asked me to put together a list of 10 Los Angeles landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places that you need to see. If you’re a subscriber, check it out for a breezy overview and a map:
For even deeper dives, here are links to my historical writeups on nine of my selections:
- The Lummis House (Al Alisal) – Highland Park
- Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis, Freeman, Millard & Storer Houses – Los Feliz, Hollywood, Pasadena
- Vasquez Rocks – Agua Dulce
- La Laguna de San Gabriel – San Gabriel Valley
- The Old Mill (El Molino Viejo) – San Marino
- 27th Street Historic District – South LA
- Angels Flight – Downtown LA
- Mission San Fernando Rey de España – Mission Hills
- Rockhaven Sanitarium – Verdugo/Montrose
Thanks to Michelle Woo at the Times for making this happen. I’m still pinching myself!
